I caught a virus\trojan on my hackintosh

Yes its true....

3 people said to me:  "I thought macs couldn't get viruses"

Its not common but its very possible....

Ive built many hackintoshes & never had to deal with virus activity and I refused to believe the whole "Macs don't get viruses" statement.

So I deliberately accepted a trojan.

(I did it for you, thank me later)

The story:

I went downloading a program from a torrent site (don't ask, I will not tell)
I have Norton for mac installed & it went crazy after the download was complete. Usually when that happens I delete the program with no hesitations.

Some people say usually its a false alarm because of the keygen.

So then it hit me, since there is a rumor about macs being immune to viruses, I decided to take the plunge. I aborted Nortons recommended option which is: quarantine & delete the trojan infected file.

The results:

Safari block pop-ups, so no annoying ads...

(fake mac virus scanner or something of that nature)

This is where it gets interesting. My utilities such as terminal & boot camp assistant where moved to another folder named "utilities" located in documents. I realized this after I tried to run "activity monitor"

When activity monitor is moved from the location application/utilities it will not function properly and you will start to see the spinning pinwheel. there will be no way to close activity monitor unless you force quit.

Luckily that was my only problem.
I found & removed the trojan with a free antivirus called ClamXav

Final notes:

Earlier I stated I have Norton for mac installed, yet I installed another antivirus called ClamXav.

Heres the bottom line, sometimes a single anti virus is not enough.
In some cases you might need a little more protection. One of the most important things I have learned in my first year in communication electronics is "NOTHING IS 100 PERCENT EFFICIENT"

When I scanned with Norton It only found the package I download containing the trojan but I followed my gut instincts & did some research on other solutions.

ClamXav found & deleted a different (active) trojan

Although your chances are greater of NOT getting a trojan\virus because of the nature of Mac OSX, Just remember its very possible. So if you have not done it already then go get a antivirus and be careful!

Gaming on Hackintosh!!!

I am currently testing out games on 2 of my hackintoshes

A few people have mentioned that they would like to know if they can play games on there hackintoshes.

Well I plan to answer theses questions whatever the answer is, I will give a reason to why.

This will be another "OMG hackintosh" video.

I am still looking for games to try out, before I start filming.

If you have any questions or ideas??

Gavanelli - Hackintosh tip number 2

Practice makes perfect -

I dont recommend jumping into this with your cash in hand headed to the computer store for parts.
I say you find something like a Dell computer with a pentium 4 or dual core processor and try your hand at installing snow leopard.

You can start by grabbing a retail copy of snow leopard and a boot loader. But I strongly suggest you start with a distro like iAtkos S3 or Hazards snow leopard install.

This will at least get your feet wet & your hands dirty.
(not literally, unless you got to open up the pc and do some modifying)

Somewhere along the line you might have to check your bios and make sure settings are appropriate for OSX to boot for installation.

Example:

during your osx booting process you might run into error messages such as:

"Still waiting for root device"

"System Uptime in Nanoseconds = 233448533"

In some situations small changes in the bios can be made to help.

CONCLUSION:

Practice makes perfect

Thats why I say: get your feet wet first by getting a old dell computer as a test dummy for your hackintosh project. You can find them anywhere, someone just might give you one for free but if you have to buy one then don't spend no more than $50 on it.

Save the big dollars & visa card for your real project\investment.

Gavanelli - Hackintosh tip number 1

Just to think, this whole hackintosh thing started out as being something to do in my spare time. Now I find myself either hackintoshing a dell or building a hackintosh from scratch.

I'm by no means JUST a hobbyist. Im a computer technician who enjoy a good challenge and I like the fact that there is always something new to learn.

I am going to give out some tips from time to time. This will help a lot of you newbies out, maybe help take the edge off and reduce your frustrations and failure rate.

Tip number 1: Read Research & Review

You can jump into this blindfolded if you want to....   you might even get lucky, but sometimes luck can only take you but so far.

EXAMPLE:

You might manage to install OSX with no hitches or hiccups but then you come across a fork in the road do I update? or  keep it as is?

Theres this hot new feature you want to take advantage of; so you say: "ahhh what the hell, I got this far". So you update and BOW!  Kernal Panic!

Guess what?  you also failed to create a separate partition for "time machine" (thats even if you know what time machine is) and no boot command or boot loader can boot you back into OSX: Kitty Kat (Leopard, Snow leopard, or Lion) so now you have to start all over from scratch - These things do happen, all the time as a matter of fact.

CONCLUSION:

The point I am getting at is: READ, RESEARCH, & REVIEW

learn from other people mistakes. Join a forum, make friends & ask questions.
